📖 How Chinese Baby Naming Works · 中国起名传统
In Chinese tradition a name is a life-long blessing. Families weigh several classical factors:
- 生肖 Zodiac animal — the year's animal favours certain character radicals (a Rat baby loves 宀 "roof" characters; a Dragon baby loves 氵 "water" characters).
- 五行 Five Elements — from the BaZi (八字) year pillar. Name characters carry elements too, and a well-chosen character strengthens the child's chart. The generating cycle (相生) — Wood feeds Fire, Fire creates Earth, Earth bears Metal, Metal carries Water, Water nourishes Wood — guides which elements support each other.
- Meaning & sound — the characters must carry beautiful meanings and flow well with the family surname.
Note: the zodiac year here follows the Lichun (立春, ≈ Feb 4) boundary used in BaZi — a January baby belongs to the previous year's pillar. For a full professional analysis the month, day and hour pillars are also read; consider consulting a naming master (起名师) for the final choice.
